Patrick Huntrods, known as Pat Fish, reminisced about growing up in an era where “the Bonzo Dog Band appeared on children’s television, Syd Barrett was on Top of the Pops, and the Adult World was represented in shows like The Avengers and The Prisoner.”

Pat moved early in his life to Northampton and studied Classics at Merton College, Oxford, graduating in 1980. He ended up traveling down a musical path, forming different bands such as:

Some records like Bloody Nonsense and Distressed Gentlefolk became college radio staples in North America before releasing a series of albums for Creation Records between 1988 and 1995.

The Jazz Butcher debuted in Oxford on February 20, 1982, with Alice Thompson (The Woodentops), Owen Jones, and Max Eider. Pat wrote and released 15 albums of original music, three live albums, and many singles and compilations.

Pat Fish and his Early Life

By the late 1980s, Pat Fish was feeling restricted both by the “Jazz Butcher” name and by guitar pop. Soon after something mysterious, “Black Eg” project started. It is an album of ambient dance music around synthesizers and samples, was released by Creation in 1991, purporting to be the work of one Karel von Dammerung of Vienna. The Black Eg themselves made their live debut on June 1, 1994, at Soundshaft in London.

In the early 1990s, Pat diversified his activities in other ways. Fish produced at least one record, the single “Lost at Sea” by 13 Frightened Girls, which was recorded in 1990. He appeared on recordings by other bands, contributing a flute solo to 1991 “I Love You” and guitar and organ on 1995 The Blue Aeroplanes’ Rough Music.

Pat Fish had formed a new band with other Northampton-based musicians by 1996. The band had their live debut in London on March 11, 1997. Pat was a guitarist, their sound was built far more around sequencers, and the rhythms were more dance-orientated. Their first and only album, This is Sumo, was released on January 26, 1998.
