A man who involved in standoff after a shooting in Broken Bow arrested by police in rural Custer County on Saturday.

The stepson of the victim was arrested Saturday following a homicide and standoff in Broken Bow, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

Troopers said 44-year-old Trenton Esch, the stepson of the victim, was arrested after a brief standoff with police and killing his stepmother, 66-year-old Crystal Esch, in rural Custer County.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, the Custer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported shooting at Round Valley Road, north of Broken Bow around 6:30 p.m.

NSP said the victim 62-year-old Crystal Esch was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is believed that Esch fled to his residence at 208 South N Street in Broken Bow after the shooting. NSP SWAT responded to the scene, and after a brief standoff around 9:40 pm, Esch exited the residence voluntarily and was taken into custody without further incident.

Esch has been lodged in Dawson County Jail. The Nebraska State Patrol is leading the ongoing investigation.
