Author of the Spook’s fantasy book series Joseph Delaney’s cause of death was announced after his death on August 16, 2022, at the age of 77. His family shared the devastating news.

He passed away on August 16 “after an illness, which, in his indomitable style, he kept to himself and his family so he could carry on with writing as much as he possibly could”, a touching statement from publisher Penguin Random House on behalf on Delaney’s family said.

The author’s children — Joanne, Stephen, and Paul paid tribute to their dad’s boundless’ imagination, saying there is a great deal of Joseph in his writing on every page.

In a statement, the family wrote: “Dad loved writing and lived his dream over the last 18 years as an author published by Random House and Penguin

“His imagination was boundless, and he could have kept creating new and exciting stories for years to come. He enjoyed meeting fans throughout the world and hearing their thoughts on his books.”

His family added: “We are very proud of what he achieved. There is a great deal of Dad in his writing, and we see that in every page. When we were young children, Dad would tell us very scary stories that should not have been told after dark! We are so fortunate to have those memories.”

They remembered their father as a wonderful dad and a deeply caring human with an infectious sense of humor. “We hope that his books will inspire children and adults to create stories and live dreams of their own. That would have made him happy.”

“We would like to thank Penguin Random House as well as all the wonderful people who helped him on his adventure, and especially everyone who has read his books,” their statement concluded.

Joseph Henry Delaney was born on July 25, 1945, in Preston, Lancashire. He attended Preston Catholic College and worked as an apprentice engineer and fitter.

Delaney studied A Levels at night school before starting his degree course at Lancaster University. Following his graduation, Delaney studied at St Martin’s College to become a teacher.

He became an English teacher at the Blackpool Sixth Form College and helped start the Media and Film Studies Department. In the 1980s he completed an Open University degree in order to become a computer programmer.

His first works were written under the pseudonym J. K. Haderack. In 2004, he Begin with the publication of the first book of the dark fantasy Spook series, and it was published under his real name.

Afterward, he achieved international success chronicling the adventures of his main character, Tom Ward. The Spook’s series has been published in thirteen countries, with sales exceeding 4.5 million copies.

The talented writer retired from teaching following the publication of his second book in the Spook’s series, to write full-time.

Delaney identified Frank Herbert and J. R. R. Tolkien as his two inspirations, as well as Lancashire folk tales and places of local interest to where he lived. Joseph similar to Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, used his dreams to help write his great stories.

From 2015 to 2017, Joseph published the science fiction Arena 13 trilogy. From 2018 to 2019, Delaney published the dark fantasy Aberrations series.

He had three children and nine grandchildren. His first wife Marie passed away in 2007, at the age of 58. The great Author s survived by his second wife, Rani, his two sons and one daughter, and his grandchildren.

Ruth Knowles, publishing director for Puffin, also paid touching tributes to the late Author. He said he was so proud to have been Delaney’s editor for many years.

Knowles continued: “I hope he’s with the ghosts of his beloved Lancashire now and that there’s some delicious red wine on tap. We are so very proud to publish him.”
