Legendary Tottenham Defender; Maurice Norman Passed Away
With the most profound sorrow, we have to inform you that an English footballer, Maurice Norman passed away on November 27, 2022, at the age of 88. He was the Tottenham Hotspur legend and Spurs double-winner. May he rest in peace.
Maurice was born on May 8, 1934, in Mulbarton, Norfolk, where he was spotted by a Norwich City scout playing in a cup final for Wymondham Juniors. In 1952, when he was 18 years old, he signed professional forms and only had 35 games in his career at Carrow Road, Spurs came calling in November 1955.
Between 1955–1965, he made 411 appearances as the defensive rock of Bill Nicholson’s all-conquering team and became one of only 13 players to reach that 400-game milestone since they joined the Football League in 1908.
This legendary footballer rose to fame after he spent the next 11 years at Tottenham where he became a club legend. He had a fruitful career which we can mention winning the FA Cup in 1962 as well as the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963.
Under the leadership of legend Bill Nicholson, he won the famous Double in 1961 as the result of 411 appearances that he had in this team throughout his career and made different records in Tottenham’s history.
His outstanding, consistent displays were also recognized at the international level. Maurice was capped 23 times by England and was included in squads for the 1958 and 1962 World Cups. Some of his achievements are:
- 357 league apps
- 16 goals
- 37 FA Cup apps 2 goals
- 17 Euro apps 1 goal
- 23 England caps
Norman was considered a tall, powerful center-half and an experienced player. Some believe that he had a huge influence on the team and he was the main reason that team became the first British team to triumph in Europe with our Cup Winners’ Cup success in 1963.
It has been said that he was superb on the ball, often starting attacks from the back as Bill’s team swept all before them, winning the league and FA Cup double in 1960/61, retaining the FA Cup in 1962.
