Venezuelan prelate of the Catholic Church Jorge Liberato Urosa Savino’s cause of death has been clarified after he passed away on Thursday (September 23, 2021) at the age of 79, a month after entering a hospital in Caracas. May he rest in peace.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by the Archdiocese of Caracas through Twitter, announcing Cardinal Baltazar Porras, Auxiliary Bishops of Caracas, and the Venezuelan clergy “communicate the sensitive death of the Most Eminent Cardinal Jorge Urosa Savino this Thursday.”
He was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of a clinic in the southeast of Caracas. The Venezuelan Episcopal Conference confirmed on August 27 that the cardinal was infected for the new coronavirus.
Following Urosa Savino’s resignation in August 2017at the age of 75, Urosa Sabino kicked of working as honorary president of the Episcopal Conference and archbishop emeritus of Caracas the next year.
Born in Caracas on August 28, 1942, the great bishop studied ecclesiastical studies at the Interdiocesan Seminary in Caracas and the Saint Augustine Seminary in Toronto, Canada, obtaining a doctorate in Dogmatic Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
On August 15, 1967, he had ordained a minister in the Archdiocese of Caracas; he was professor and Superior of the San José de Caracas Seminary and successively Rector of the Santa Rosa de Lima Interdiocesan Seminary in Caracas.

Official sources reported Jorge Liberato Urosa Savino’s cause of death as COVID-19 after being admitted to a Caracas clinic. He received the sacrament of the sick before being transferred to the intensive care unit and placed on a ventilator.
On 3 September 2021, the Caracas archdiocese rejected rumors spreading in the media that the cardinal lost his life; however, he said the cardinal’s health was in a weak but stable condition, and he was receiving all the required medical interventions in the intensive care ward.
On September 12, the archdiocese declared the cardinal’s health had declined, and he was in a delicate health condition.

Urosa Savino was appointed as titular bishop of Vegesela de Bizacena and Auxiliary of Caracas. He held the episcopal consecration on September 22, 1982. On March 16, 1990, he was appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of the central city of Valencia in Venezuela. In September 2005, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Urosa Savino Archbishop of Caracas.
