Karen Olivo leaves Moulin Rouge as a form of protest against the theater industry’s silence on allegations of workplace harassment and abusive behavior against the prolific theater producer Scott Rudin.

On Monday, the Tony winner, who played Satine in the Broadway production, shared a video calling for humanity in the theatre industry, saying, “social justice is actually more important than being a sparkling diamond.”

“Building a better industry for my students is more important than putting money in my pockets. Building a better industry, I’m screaming now, building a better industry is more important than putting money in my pockets,” Olivo said in the scathing Instagram video.

“For all who won’t listen to me, the silence on Scott Rudin is unacceptable. Unacceptable. That’s the easy one, you will. That is a monster. That should be a no-brainer … What does your integrity say you should do? Are you going to protect your wallet and let people go to the ER so you can go to your next concert?,” the 44-year-old actress added.

On Monday, Moulin Rouge! Actress Karen Olivo shared a video on Instagram and announced that she will not return to Broadway production. Olivo’s announcement arrives two days after three theater unions, SAG-AFTRA, Actors Equity, and the American Federation of Musicians Local 802. detailed allegations of workplace harassment and abuse by Scott Rudin.

Moulin Rouge! Producers released a statement and confirmed Olivo’s departure. They also expressed support for the Broadway star. “We can confirm that Karen Olivo will not return to the production when the show resumes performances on Broadway,” they said in a statement.
