Unfortunately, the longtime owner of the popular White Rock restaurant Charlie Don’t Surf passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2021. John Carroll, White Rock Owner’s cause of death, has been reported as Covid-19.

John Carroll founded the restaurant located at 15011 Marine Drive in 1985. “John was someone who always stood up for what was right,” Kyle Grant, general manager of Charlie Don’t Surf, said about John.

Restaurant staff released John Carroll’s death “after a bitter battle with COVID-19” in a post on their Facebook page, writing:

“Today is a sad day for all of us. The larger-than-life Patriarch of our family, John, passed away today after a hard fought battle with COVID-19. We lost a mentor, and the world lost a White Rock legend. Born an immigrant, a self-made man, he started building the icon that is Charlie’s in 1985. We all knew him to be a sassy, hard working man who was always eager to give feedback and to make his vision for the world a reality.”

The post continues: “His powerful presence and willingness to go the extra mile for his friends and family enabled the creation of multiple businesses in all walks of life — all our extended family. We know he’s looking down on his legacy with a wheat grass smoothie and an organic grass fed beef skewer in hand. We’ll miss you, boss. ‘Get on with it.’ “

Jurgen Windcaller said John Carroll was the reason he became a bartender. “He was honestly the biggest ray of sunshine. He lit up every place he walked in with his smile and energy. He gave us a place where we felt right at home and treated us all like his own children.”

The staff wrote that Carroll was “a sassy, hardworking man, always ready to give his opinion and make his world view a reality.”

The executive director of the White Rock Business Improvement Association, Alex Nixon, said Charlie Don’t Surf is one of the area’s most successful businesses and an important part of the White Rock community. Nixon added that John Carroll had a big impact on his staff and the business community in general, adding that “He was a character and a leader in the business world… I don’t have enough good things to say about him.”
