Details surrounding ‘Saving Private Ryan’ star Tom Sizemore’s cause of death at the age of 61 were announced on March 3, 2023. He died in his sleep at a hospital in Burbank, California.
“It is with great sadness and sorrow I have to announce that actor Thomas Edward Sizemore (‘ Tom Sizemore ‘) aged 61 passed away peacefully in his sleep today at St Joseph’s Hospital Burbank,” Charles Lago, his representative, said in a statement.
“His brother Paul and twin boys Jayden and Jagger (17) were at his side. I am very saddened by the loss of not only a client but a great friend and mentor of almost 15 years.
“Tom was one of the most sincere, kind, and generous human beings I have had the pleasure of knowing,” the statement read.
On February 18, 2023, the legendary star suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm at his home and was hospitalized at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in critical condition.
Lago had previously issued a statement on February 27 that doctors had determined there was “no further hope and have recommended end-of-life decision” to Sizemore’s family.
“Tom is hospitalized in intensive care due to a brain aneurism (sic). He is currently in critical condition, and it’s a wait-and-see situation,” Lago said in a statement.
The actor is best remembered for playing battle-hardened soldiers in two films — Steven Spielberg’s World War Two epic “ Saving Private Ryan” and Ridley Scott’s portrayal of the U.S. military’s ill-fated 1993 raid in Mogadishu, Somalia, “ Black Hawk Down.”

Tom Sizemore’s cause of death was revealed by his manager, Charles Lago. He suffered a brain aneurysm on February 18 and died after being taken off life support.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of my big brother Tom. He was larger than life. He has influenced my life more than anyone I know,” his brother Paul Sizemore said in a statement.
“He was talented, loving, giving and could keep you entertained endlessly with his wit and storytelling ability. I am devastated he is gone and will miss him always,” he added.
Born in Detroit on November 29, 1961, Sizemore moved to New York City to pursue acting in the ’80s. His first credits came in 1989 when he appeared in Oliver Stone’s best picture nominee “Born on the Fourth of July.”
Known for playing the tough guy, he earned fame in the 1990s with films like “ True Romance,” “Passenger 57,” “Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man,” and “Natural Born Killers.”
He got his big break in Steven Spielberg’s 1998 war movie “Saving Private Ryan,” in which Sizemore played Technical Sergeant Mike Horvath.
Along with his co-stars, among them Tom Hanks and Matt Damon, Tom received a Screen Actors Guild nomination for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture.
He has worked with directors including Peter Hyams, Michael Mann, Oliver Stone, Martin Scorsese, Carl Franklin, Ridley Scott, and Michael Bay.
In 1998, the actor shared that his “Heat” and “ Witness to the Mob “ co-star, Robert De Niro, assisted in helping Tom enter a drug rehabilitation program.
In 2013, the star released a memoir detailing his professional career and personal battle with addiction, titled “ By Some Miracle I Made It Out of There.”
Sizemore is survived by his two children, Jayden and Jagger. There will be a private cremation service for his family, with a larger celebration of life event planned in a few weeks.
