Thich Nhat Hanh’s Bio:

As you may already know, Nhất Hạnh had been a leader in the Engaged Buddhism movement, promoting the individual’s active role in creating change. With originating the concept, he credited the 13th-century Vietnamese king Trần Nhân Tông who abdicated his throne to become a monk and founded the Vietnamese Buddhist school of the Bamboo Forest tradition.

The beloved Hạnh had completed new English and Vietnamese translations of the Heart Sutra back in September 2014. He wrote these new translations in a letter to his students because he thought that poor word choices in the original text had resulted in significant misunderstandings of these teachings for almost 2,000 years.

“Feelings come

and go like clouds

in a windy sky.

Conscious breathing

is my anchor.”

He has released over 130 books, including over 100 in English, sold over 5 million copies worldwide;

  • The Art of Living: Peace and Freedom in the Here and Now
  • Being Peace
  • You Are Here: Discovering the Magic of the Present Moment
  • The Miracle of Mindfulness
  • Anger: Wisdom for Cooling the Flames

Nobel laureate Martin Luther King Jr. nominated Nhất Hạnh for the 1967 Nobel Peace Prize, which was not awarded that year. Later he was awarded the 1991 Courage of Conscience award. In 2015, he received the Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award.

He is considered to be a prolific author, poet, teacher, and peace activist who was exiled from Vietnam after opposing the war in the 1960s. He found his way to become a leading voice in a movement he called engaged Buddhism.

He started his long journey by traveling widely to speak tours in the United States and Europe, becoming fluent in English and French. He turned to a significant influence on Western practices of Buddhism, urging the embrace of mindfulness.
